I wanna write an area, but I dunno how. The Help section on forums is pretty lacking. Thor's just confused me, I couldn't even open it (possibly because am on a mac?). Any help would be great.

Before you start an area you want to have it approved. Please read the two posts in this section (http://forums.finalchallenge.net/forumdisplay.php?f=46) of the forums.

I know, but I just want to make sure I'm actually ABLE to (in terms of getting the right programs etc.) before I commit to actually writing one.

What could you not open? I think the best bet until Thor's area creator is finished, is for you to use the Muditor with a Mac emulator for DOS.
I found the below DOS emulator for Macs but I am not sure if it will work for you.
DOSBox (http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/DOSBox.shtml)
