Its been an issue several times in the past, but as new cool things get implemented (such as the new scavenger quests), the lack of this spell for shamans puts them at an additive disadvantage. Its about time they get it.

No, it's not about time they get it.
At least it wasn't lacking passion :P On the plus side, I never liked those shamans anyway.

I'm with Ink! Reboot hits, no one logs on their shaman. And no real incentive to just casually play a shaman, they can kill but they can't just locate items in slots they need and go adventuring for them.
Direct seemed to be the best approach.
Come up with another idea that accomplishes the same goal without cribbing the spell from another class.
Back a while, if you petitioned for immortality, you had to find certain widgets. There was a skill that let you sense if one was in the zone. (Sorry, it's been 10 years, I don't remember the names of the abilities or the object) Maybe have something like that for Shaman - sensing the magic of the item when you were in the zone with it?
what's a widget? And can you elaborate? If it just tells you if a magic item is in the zone I don't get it since every zone does. If it tells you there's a random magical hat in the zone then it's neat.
Retrieve item: like summon for items but your little animal friends go and steal it. c 'retrieve' hat gets you a hat off a mob in the zone. (I said this on TFC but hope you take a second look at it when RL's not breathing down your neck Tyn). Maybe limit it to mobs your size or smaller or to random items only so you can't just go and summon the best limiteds off the huge mobs. Also, you could make it only usable if the shaman has their pet with them (an aspect of TFC which is never really used but is neat nonetheless).
Or if you don't like the summon item idea, you could combine it with Cordir's - the animal searches the zone for that particular item (kind of a watered down locate object but for zone only)
Sorry, I keep editing because new aspects of it come to me.

erm. ack. memory and I are not such good friends. They were random items, that generated with an additional flag. The flag made them a 'goditem' or whatever it was. You had to find them, and wear them, for the Immortality Petition Quest - so yeah, it had to be an item you COULD wear. (Sadly, the only one I got my hands on was metal; I was a mage and couldn't use it.). You would travel zones, and type in a single command - it was something like "sense". What I was thinking of was a "sense + (object keywords)" or a "Sense + (affect)" ... Not sure if that makes any sense?
hm, I have a log of this somewhere when someone gave me one he could not use. Only people questing could see the flag on the item. I'll look for the log when I get home. But you had to find a Guru and do a certain command, and then you could search for the item.
The guru is still there, but doesn't offer the quest anymore. He is at udnw in the vtex (kinda on the way to Jill). The command was "ESP", and you could use it to gather the items. Was a neat quest. I will gladly work on figuring out something for this other than stealing an already existing spell. <3
I found the logs. Below is what happened when you went to the Guru and started the quest.
Solanthas found a quest item which he could not use, so he gave it to me. Below is the log of what happened when I wielded the item.Code:The guru says, 'Many mystical items are hidden in the world.'. The guru says, 'For a questor, they are filled with POWER!'. The guru looks at the ground and draws a symbol there. The guru says, 'They all look normal to the untrained eye.'. The guru says, 'Good luck! And may your quest be...challenging.'.

The guru quest was easily my favorite TFC experience. Fun to see this log.
Yes! thank you, gentlemen, for translating my confused babble.![]()
Ok here's my idea since Tynian is intent on a shaman equivalent that isn't locate object.
Due to their affinity with nature, shamans are more in-tune with natural materials.
‘sniff’ – a skill or spell
A shaman is able to sniff out the natural materials in the area (zone).
Materials located in the area would include:
fur
wooden
druidwood
potions (these are made from herbs after all right??)
and leather (it’s made from animal hides after all)
Umm spider-silk?
I’m not sure of all the materials available off the top of my head.
You wouldn’t be able to sniff out a certain slot, but instead it would show a number of random items at once.
You sniff out:
A fur cloak carried by a man.
A studded leather jacket carried by the dog.
A medium wooden shield carried by a child.
A bright white potion with clear swirls carried by the cat.
A druidwood buckler carried by the armorer.
It should probably only work on random items since certain zones like Kuroth would just be spammed by all the studded leather gear that pops on each guard – but that part’s up to Tyn.
well i think it should work on all the items.. since youre sniffing out "natural" materials, unless magic had a scent too.. that would take care of alot. if it only worked on randoms it would kind of be too easy for a shaman to random.
idk how sniffing would show who carries the item, unless youve smelled "a man" before and you already know what he smells like. its a cool idea, but maybe "sniff" shouldnt be the word.
Only randoms have actual material types. Otherwise, it's a "locate object" that only allows locates based on certain keywords.
It's an interesting idea.
Pharuin's idea I think is heading in the right direction. Not sure how I'd improve it, but it seems like its lacking just a few small details. Once I am finished with my move I will provide more input.
I really like the direction of this discussion, too. What I am not sure of is whether this ability would offer any advantage over simply thunderclapping an entire zone. I suppose if the spell indicated that nothing of interest was in a zone, it would save you the trouble of slaying everything... but slaying everything generates randoms and is a good thing to do.
I think rather than material type, I would like a spell that senses the potency of a particular stat on a nearby item. Like, for a +3 str item, you might get a message that says "You sense a powerful boar spirit nearby" or some such. It wouldn't even need to tell you what the item is, or who is carrying it. Just knowing that there is a cool item in zone is enough reason to clap clap clap and collect whatever shiny things you come across.
Thunderclapping an entire zone is time consuming and could end up being a waste of time. This would allow you to know which mobs to kill and, if you're after a certain slot, it would give you an idea of where to look.
I think sensing stats would be neat on items in your inv, but that's a lot like ID.
While i like the 'retrieve item' idea, as described above, i think it would offbalance current scavenger hunts. perhaps if it didn't work during scavenger hunts? or make the mana cost of it prohibitive? or maybe simply make it a new order for charmed mobs to follow, and the charmee must attempt to 'steal' the item, possibly killing the charmee in the process?
my 2 pence
