Anduin,
I'm a merchant. Because I focus on non limited items, partaking in merchanting activities does not require me to leave the guild. It does require a willingness to sell the shirt off my back and extensive knowledge of game economics, (especially the proper control / utilization of Mish).
I'm sure that most individuals could guess that there is a reciprocal nature of my gold and my equipment. Obvisouly, I use my gold to purchase new items so that I may continue to hold inventory and grow my business. I also accept and provide credit to individuals that I deem trustworthy. This happens with both monetary loans, and items.
Of my current inventory, most of the items are my own; although, some valuable ones are not. There are a few things that were given to me by other people with an expectation of a beneficial return. Usually, it is more profitable for me to aquire items on my own. However, the benefits of increasing my buying power are a primary concern, so if a deal greatly benefits my bottem line I am willing to work under special circumstances.
The most enjoyable part of being a merchant is effectively using the massive cash flow I am generating. I like to bid at live auctions, - nothing will sell for less than it is worth when I am present. I like to buy from individuals, and I like to pay big ... For instance, I placed a 650K mish bid for a level 30 blocking, and opened with an 800k bid on a live auction for a lvl 32 ts.... As one of the very few merchant characters on tfc, my interactions actually help determine the real value of various items, this is because of my determination to purchase, as well as my patience to wait for a proper sale.
I am unwilling to devulge the exact details of my system, but the most profitable sales usually stem from purchases made for less than 1,000 gold. I hope that I have answered your questions, although I feel as though you should have been able to come to this conclusion on your own accord.
